What is SmartPresenter?

SmartPresenter is an AI-driven platform designed to aid English as an Additional Language (EAL) students in tertiary education with oral presentations. It offers personalized learning materials and provides instant feedback on presentation skills like facial expressions and pronunciation. The platform’s pilot study demonstrated that students’ second presentations, influenced by AI feedback from their initial attempts, showed overall improvement.

Motivation

This project aims to address the challenges faced by English as an Additional Language (EAL) students and teachers in developing practical oral presentation skills. EAL students often lack presentation tips and feedback, hindering their progress. Additionally, teachers may lack training to effectively teach English oral presentation skills and find it challenging to provide timely and detailed feedback in large classes. To overcome these issues, the project proposes an online platform with AI-generated feedback based on adjustable rubrics, benefiting both students and teachers by offering tailored learning tips and reducing teachers’ workloads.

It offers Learning Units with tailored tips on content, structure, delivery, and pronunciation for improved presentations. The AI feedback provides benefits like encouraging diverse language usage, suggesting suitable locations for recording, and aiding students in focusing on specific rubric components. By using AI grading with rubrics, teachers can ease their workload, gaining an overall picture of students’ performance and focusing on content evaluation. Teachers have the option to adopt AI-generated grades or customize them to align with their course objectives.
